Your guide to Chianti wine country set between Florence and Siena — learn more about its villages, vineyards, food, and hidden corners.
When we think of Tuscany, our minds immediately wander right to Chianti, one of the most magical, loved, and photographed corners of the entire region (and let’s be honest, the whole world)! But have you ever wondered exactly where it begins and ends?
Drawing clear borders is a bit of a challenge. Generally speaking, the heart of Chianti winds between the provinces of Florence and Siena, filling the entire space between the two cities and stretching east toward the Valdarno and west toward the Val d'Elsa. However, if we're talking about wine, the "Chianti zone" expands even further: it surrounds Florence and reaches all the way toward Arezzo, Pistoia, and Montepulciano.
Because of this, you’ll often hear people talk about "Florentine Chianti" and "Sienese Chianti." A geographical way to find your bearings? Not just that — it’s often a direct reference to the exact origin of that glass of wine you're sipping!
The territory here is truly unique: a rolling sea of soft, vibrant green hills covered with vineyards and olive groves stretching as far as the eye can see. Around every bend, you'll find small villages made of stone untouched by time, characteristic parish churches, and those classic Tuscan farmhouse estates we all dream about.
The landscapes of Chianti are so incredibly perfect that they’ve inspired generations of photographers. Almost all of those postcard-perfect photos and calendars you see in souvenir shops featuring Tuscany were taken right here from these very views!
